The Hollies Visits The Cairn Distillery

Just a three-minute drive from Muckrach Country House brings you to The Cairn Distillery in Grantown-on-Spey.

We originally planned a quick visit but couldn’t resist the chance for a personal tour of this stunning new distillery overlooking the breathtaking River Spey.

With The Hollies Retreats properties—Muckrach Country House and the Highland Lodges—just down the road, we’ve watched The Cairn rise from its foundations. True to its name, which means a “stack of stones raised for a purpose,” this state-of-the-art distillery is a masterpiece of modern design.

As always, the landscape captivated us. The crisp, snow-covered Cairngorm mountains framed the scene, while the icy River Spey flowed nearby. Thoughtfully designed, The Cairn blends beautifully with its natural surroundings.

A Warm Welcome

At the entrance, a friendly staff member greeted us and arranged a short tour. We explored both the tasting room and the ‘still’ room, where floor-to-ceiling windows immersed us in the stunning Highland scenery. The rich aroma and smooth taste of The Cairn’s Highland malt whisky made the experience unforgettable. Stepping onto the veranda, we soaked in the fresh air and breathtaking views.

Next, we stopped by the coffee shop for lunch, light snacks, and expertly brewed coffee—each served to perfection.

Beyond their hospitality, the staff impressed us with their deep knowledge of both the distillery and the region. We left with a greater appreciation for the craftsmanship behind The Cairn and can’t wait to return.

Now firmly on the whisky trail, The Cairn has placed Grantown-on-Spey among the Highlands’ legendary distilleries. We’re thrilled to see it take its rightful place alongside the world’s most renowned whisky makers.
