The Ultimate Burns Night Guide

Are you looking to make the most of this year’s Burns Night? We’ve curated a guide for you to immerse yourself in the rich traditions of this Scottish celebration as we explore the key elements that will make your Burns Night one to remember. Whether you’re looking for inspiration, history behind the event, or somewhere to stay for your Burns Night – we’ve covered everything below!

The History Behind Burns Night

Burns Night has been a traditional Scottish celebration for many years, with the first Burns supper dating back to July 1801. The first supper was held at Burns Cottage in Alloway by nine of Burns closest friends for the fifth anniversary of his passing. To celebrate the life of Robert Burns, they drank Scottish Whisky, had a delicious Haggis supper and performed pieces of Burns work. Now it is traditional to celebrate in the same fashion but on his birthday instead, the 25th of January.

Crafting a Culinary Experience

At The Hollies Farm Shop, we have everything you need to host your own luxurious Burns Night at home (don’t forget to start your supper off with a collective reading of the Selkirk Grace!).

Traditionally, the haggis is then piped in, followed by an ‘Address to a Haggis’ poem and a toast to celebrate the culinary feast. You can find Ramsay of Scotland and Macsween Haggis in The Hollies Farm Shop in Cheshire, as well as a range of vegetarian Haggis options, Scottish Oatcakes, Haggis Pakora, Haggis Sausages from our Butchery and so much more to create the ultimate culinary feast. However, you’re celebrating, dive into the classic Scottish cuisine of haggis, neeps, and tatties.

Don’t forget to pair your meal with a fine Scotch whisky, toasting to the poetic legacy of Robert Burns. The Hollies Farm Shop have a collection of remarkable Scotch, including The Hearach Single Malt by Isle of Harris.

Burns Poet Recitals

Traditionally after enjoying your delicious meal, the first Burns recital is performed. Followed by a tribute speech known as the Immortal Memory and a second Burns recital. Then, there is a Toast to the Lassies – a ‘thank you’ for cooking the delicious meal and bring to life the witty nature of the event. This Toast is typically followed by a Reply to the Toast to the Lassies, and then final Burns recital is performed. To finish the night, everyone will fold their arms and join hands whilst the ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is sang.
