The Cairngorms National Park is the largest national park in the UK, and allows for a abundance of wildlife. It is a stronghold for many rare and endangered species, living in some of their most natural landscapes. Birds
Golden Eagle:
This truly magnificent bird can be argued as one of Britain’s most iconic bird of prey. If you’re lucky enough, and spend enough time in the Highlands then you may see this great bird soaring around the ridgelines and looking for prey.
Capercaillie:
They are one of Scotland’s most characteristic birds yet 80% of the UK’s capercaillie live in the Cairngorm National Park. They are one of nature’s most magnificent sights and yet unfortunately one that is perilously close to becoming extinct. The turkey-sized capercaillie require large areas of forest to survive and work carried out to benefit them are likely to benefit a wide range of other native species that live in the same habitat.
Animals
Red Deer:
Our largest land mammal the majestic Red Deer is one of our most impressive wildlife spectacles in the Cairngorm National Park. Grazing on grasses, heather and woody plants, the can be found over a large swathe of the park from woodlands to moorland right up to the mountain tops. Red deer can live in large groups, sometimes consisting of hundreds of individuals, and so when you see one you are most likely to see more.
Red Squirrel:
The national park is refuge for native red squirrels, in fact there are so many that there are now more than enough red squirrels to export some to other parts of Scotland to populate other areas. Whilst you’re walking in the forests listen out for the skittering if claws on tree bark, and if you’re lucky enough you can follow one of nature’s finest acrobats as it dances amongst the tree tops.
Highland Cows:
These distinctive cattle, known for their long horns and shaggy coats, are often seen grazing in the picturesque Scottish Highlands, where their rugged appearance perfectly complements the wild, scenic landscape. Visitors can encounter these iconic Highland Cows in various locations, such as the Isle of Skye, Glencoe, and the Cairngorms National Park, making them a charming highlight of any journey through Scotland’s rolling hills and verdant pastures.
